Dr. Paul Kurihara and Staff are always happy to answer your questions about chiropractic adjustments. For your convenience, we have provided the answers to a few of the most common questions below.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

An adjustment refers to the treatment performed by a chiropractor to restore a patient’s spine’s proper alignment. During a chiropractic adjustment, spinal subluxations (misaligned vertebrae) are gently moved back into proper placement.

Is chiropractic adjustment painful?

Chiropractic adjustments involve precise, gentle movements and manipulations of a patient’s body. An adjustment should not be painful. In fact, most patients experience relief and reduced pain during and immediately following an adjustment. Some patients might experience slight discomfort during or after an adjustment. This pain is similar to that experienced after beginning a new exercise routine. Drinking plenty of water will help mitigate any discomfort experienced following an adjustment.

How does chiropractic care work?

Spinal subluxations pinch a nerve and cause muscle tension, creating blockages in the body’s natural function. These subluxations not only hinder your body’s ability to carry out operations normally, they also lead to pain in the back and throughout the body.

What conditions can be treated?

Based on holistic principles, chiropractic care is designed to enhance your body’s ability to function overall. In addition to accelerating healing and reducing pain associated with musculoskeletal conditions such as injuries, arthritis, back pain, headaches, numbness, tingling, and sciatica, chiropractic care has also been shown to improve the function of the body’s immune and digestive systems and help with conditions such as asthma and allergies.

How many adjustments are required?

The number of adjustments required greatly depends on the conditions or injuries being treated and the individual patient’s response. Every person’s body is different and will respond differently to treatment. Dr. Kurihara works with each patient individually to monitor response to adjustment and to determine a proper frequency and number of treatments.

While the number of treatments required to achieve optimal health varies, most patients experience relief after their first adjustment.

Do I need to do anything to prepare for my appointment?

Prior to your first adjustment, we ask that you come prepared to discuss your medical history, current symptoms, and your goals for and/or expectations of chiropractic care. Arriving dressed in loose, comfortable clothing will provide you the most comfort during your adjustment, but athletic clothing is not required.
